On trek to U.N. to protest abuses by Myanmar junta

By Angela Mapes Turner
The Journal Gazette
Wherever Athein and Zaw Min Htwe stop on their cross-country trek, two flags announce their arrival.

That red-and-white striped one, with a field of 50 stars over blue? No explanation necessary.

The second flag – a yellow peacock on a blood-red background, running toward a white star – leaves many Americans stumped.

“Some people say, ‘Oh, it’s a turkey,’ ” said Athein, 35, as he unfurled the flag Thursday morning at Fort Wayne’s Triangle Park. “Some say, ‘You a Communist, or what?’ ” Read more »

21 June 08 Soldiers told the time is right to topple junta

BURMA is awash with rumours of a national uprising on August 8.

The day represents 8808 and is a significant number in a country driven by numerology and astrology.

Flyers being distributed inside Burma appeal to the foot soldiers of the military junta to turn on their overseers.

The date is strategic because the Olympic Games opens in Beijing on that day.

This links with efforts by American activists to make the Olympics a focal point of protests against oppression in Burma.

The US Campaign For Burma wants to rally one million citizens around the world to boycott television broadcasts of the Olympics unless China ends its support for Burma’s military regime.

The 8808 appeal is a powerful message for dispossessed and poorly paid Burmese soldiers working in hostile environments. Read more »

I got to meet Athein and Zaw min htwe today. They were walking a few miles outside of the town I work in (Ottawa, OH). I had seen them the day before when I was driving home from work and was confused at first to who they were. Today I went to my job as a news reporter and my editor told me to go interview them. Athein and Zaw min htwe are two very motivated men and I wish them all the best on the final leg of their journey to NYC. A small article will be on our Web site tonight (www.putnamsentinel.com) about the two men and a much larger article will be in our paper and on our site next Wednesday (June 25, 2008).
Thank you for the opportunity to write such an interesting story on such a noble cause!

Two Burmese men walk 3,000 miles across country
Hope to make it to New York by August
By Jessica Honigford

Staff Writer

GILBOA – Athein and Zaw Min Htwe have been making a more than 3,000-mile trek across the U.S. since March 1.

The pair are walking across Ohio, raising awareness about the current politcal situation in Burma.

The activists want to make it to New York in time for the United Nations Community Council on Aug. 8.

Aug. 8 Marks 20 years to the day when the Burmese military gunned down more than 3,000 peaceful protesters in the streets of Burma.

Thanks for your comment Jessica
